To determine the value of modulus of rigidity of the material of a given wire by a dynamical method using Maxwell's needie
The Maxwell’s Needle Apparatus is a physics laboratory instrument designed to determine the modulus of rigidity (shear modulus) of the material of a given wire using the dynamical method. The apparatus consists of a specially designed needle-like assembly suspended by a thin wire, with cylindrical masses arranged to study torsional oscillations.
When the suspended assembly is twisted slightly and released, it performs angular oscillations due to the restoring torque of the suspension wire. By measuring the time period of oscillations for different configurations of the masses and using the relevant dimensions and experimental observations, students can calculate the modulus of rigidity of the wire material.
This apparatus demonstrates the principles of torsion, rotational oscillations, and elastic properties of materials. It is ideal for physics laboratories in colleges, universities, and engineering institutions for practical experiments in elasticity and mechanical properties of solids.
Aim : Determine the stated elastic property of a material using the method specified in the experiment title.
