To determine the Modulus of Rigidity of a Wire by Maxwell's needle
Maxwell’s Needle Apparatus is a physics laboratory instrument designed to determine the modulus of rigidity (shear modulus) of a wire using the dynamical method. The apparatus consists of a Maxwell’s needle assembly suspended by a thin wire, with cylindrical masses arranged in different configurations to study torsional oscillations.
When the suspended assembly is twisted slightly and released, it oscillates about its vertical axis due to the restoring torque of the wire. By measuring the time periods of oscillation for different arrangements of the cylindrical masses and using the relevant dimensions and experimental observations, students can calculate the modulus of rigidity of the wire material.
This apparatus demonstrates the principles of torsion, rotational oscillations, and elastic behavior of materials. It is ideal for physics laboratories in schools, colleges, universities, and engineering institutions for practical experiments in elasticity and mechanical properties of solids.
