To determine the frequency of A.C. mains with a sonometer using non-magnetic wire
The Sonometer Apparatus for Determining the Frequency of A.C. Mains Using Non-Magnetic Wire is a physics laboratory instrument designed to determine the frequency of alternating current (A.C.) mains by studying the vibrations of a stretched non-magnetic wire placed in a magnetic field produced by an alternating current electromagnet. It is suitable for physics laboratories, colleges, universities, and educational institutions for experiments in acoustics, electromagnetism, and vibrating strings.
The apparatus generally consists of a sonometer resonance box, a stretched non-magnetic wire, movable bridges, a pulley, a weight hanger with slotted weights, and an electromagnet connected to an appropriate low-voltage A.C. supply. When alternating current flows through the electromagnet, the magnetic field varies periodically and produces a periodic force on the wire. The vibrating length and tension of the wire can be adjusted until resonance occurs.
By measuring the resonant length of the wire and the applied tension, students can calculate the frequency of the wire's vibration and determine the frequency of the A.C. mains. Since the magnetic attraction produced by an electromagnet reverses direction every half-cycle, the attractive force on a suitable wire arrangement can vary at twice the supply frequency. Therefore, the frequency relationship used in the calculation must account for the apparatus configuration.
This experiment provides practical insight into electromagnetic excitation, resonance, the laws of vibrating strings, and the measurement of electrical frequency using mechanical oscillations. It is ideal for undergraduate physics practicals and demonstrations of the relationship between electricity, magnetism, and sound.
Aim : Measure or verify the electrical or magnetic property stated in the experiment title using the specified circuit or method.
