To determine the frequency of AC. mains or of an electric vibrator by Melde's experiment
The Melde’s Experiment Apparatus for Determining the Frequency of A.C. Mains or an Electric Vibrator is a physics laboratory instrument designed to determine the frequency of an alternating current source or an electric vibrator by studying stationary waves in a stretched string.
The apparatus works on the principle of transverse and longitudinal vibrations of a string under tension. When one end of the string is connected to an electric vibrator or a suitable electromagnetic driving arrangement, the periodic motion produces vibrations in the string. By adjusting the tension or vibrating length, stationary waves with clearly defined nodes and loops can be formed.
The frequency of the vibrating string can be calculated using the vibrating length, applied tension, and mass per unit length of the string. The frequency of the electric vibrator or A.C. source can then be determined using the appropriate relationship for the experimental arrangement.
This apparatus is ideal for physics practical laboratories in schools, colleges, universities, and technical institutions. It helps students understand resonance, stationary waves, wave velocity, and the relationship between tension, vibrating length, and frequency.
Aim: Study or demonstrate the principle described by the experiment or apparatus name: To determine the frequency of AC. mains or of an electric vibrator by Melde's experiment.
