Determine Young's modulus of a material by the bending of a beam using uniform bending
The Young’s Modulus by Uniform Bending Apparatus is a physics laboratory instrument designed to determine the Young’s modulus of an elastic material by studying the uniform bending of a beam. It is widely used in undergraduate physics laboratories, engineering colleges, universities, and educational institutions for practical experiments involving elasticity and the mechanical properties of materials.
The apparatus demonstrates how a beam bends when equal loads are applied at equal distances on either side of its central region, producing a nearly constant bending moment over the portion between the loads. The resulting elevation or depression of the beam is measured using a travelling microscope or another suitable measuring arrangement.
By recording the applied load, the dimensions of the beam, the distance between the supports and loading points, and the corresponding deflection, students can calculate Young’s modulus using the appropriate uniform bending formula.
This experiment helps students understand elastic deformation, bending moments, flexural rigidity, and the relationship between applied force and beam deflection. The apparatus is suitable for engineering physics laboratories, mechanics practicals, material science demonstrations, and higher-education laboratory courses.
Aim: Determine the stated elastic property of a material using the method specified in the experiment title.
