Determine Young's modulus by non-uniform bending
The Young’s Modulus by Non-Uniform Bending Apparatus is a physics laboratory instrument designed to determine the Young’s modulus of an elastic material by studying the non-uniform bending of a beam under an applied load. It is widely used in physics laboratories, engineering colleges, universities, and educational institutions for practical experiments on elasticity and the mechanical properties of materials.
In this experiment, a beam is supported at two points and a load is applied at its centre, producing non-uniform bending. The beam’s deflection is measured using a suitable instrument, such as a travelling microscope or a deflection-measuring scale, depending on the apparatus design. By measuring the applied load, the dimensions of the beam, the distance between the supports, and the corresponding deflection, students can calculate Young’s modulus of the beam material.
The apparatus helps students understand the relationship between load and deflection, elastic deformation, bending moments, and flexural rigidity. It is suitable for undergraduate physics practicals, engineering mechanics experiments, material science demonstrations, and laboratory teaching.
Aim: Determine the stated elastic property of a material using the method specified in the experiment title.
