To determine the frequency of AC. . mains by means of a sonometer using magnetic wire
The Sonometer Apparatus for Determining the Frequency of A.C. Mains Using Magnetic Wire is an educational physics laboratory instrument designed to determine the frequency of alternating current (A.C.) by studying the vibrations of a stretched magnetic wire under the influence of an alternating magnetic field.
The apparatus demonstrates the relationship between the frequency of vibration, tension, vibrating length, and mass per unit length of a wire. When an electromagnet connected to an A.C. supply produces an alternating magnetic field, the magnetic wire experiences a periodic force and vibrates. By adjusting the wire tension or vibrating length to obtain resonance, the frequency of the A.C. mains can be calculated using the sonometer formula.
This experiment is suitable for physics practical laboratories in schools, colleges, universities, and science education institutions. It helps students understand resonance, the laws of vibrating strings, magnetic effects of electric current, and the measurement of A.C. frequency.
Aim: Measure or verify the electrical or magnetic property stated in the experiment title using the specified circuit or method.
